Investigation of the Transition State for the Acid Catalyzed Dehydration of 2-Methylcyclohexanol Using Spartan '06

Anthony J. Kiessling and Amber McCloskey. Mansfield University, Mansfield, PA

The dehydration of alcohols is a very common method for the preparation of unsaturated hydrocarbons. Some alcohols like 2-methylcyclohexanol yield a mixture of alkenes as shown below. The transition states of reactions remain an object of theoretical investigation. This work used molecular modeling software to investigate the transition states of 2-methylcyclohexanol as it proceeds to the various alkene products.
