Abstract: Benzo-fused 7-membered heterocyclic ketones have been shown to possess pharmacological activity and a great deal of research has been directed toward their synthesis. Current methods for synthesizing these compounds involve highly acidic reaction conditions, which do not allow for the incorporation of electrophilic functional groups on the ring system. A new method utilizing an intramolecular Parham cyclization has been developed and demonstrated for both the parent dibenzo[b,e]oxapinone and dibenzo[b,e]thiapinone. Future efforts in this area will also be discussed.
