This paper will present the synthesis and characterization of polymers consisting of alternating rigid and flexible segments. The rigid blocks consist of short oligo(phenylene) segments, while the flexible units consist of oligo(ethylene glycol) segments. We will also present studies on the thermal properties of these materials. In particular we will discuss how thermal transitions depend upon the lengths of both the rigid and flexible segments, as well as copolymer composition. Finally, we will present the results of polarized light microscopy experiments used to investigate possible liquid crystalline phases exhibited by these materials.
